"Everything Must Go" is a performative installation in which Dries Verhoeven explores the moral frictions of late capitalism through the figure of the shoplifter. He spoke with 24 people who sometimes "forget" to pay – from professionals to activists. Their stories form a monologue between confession and indictment, in which activism and opportunism blur and the ethics of theft and consumption are questioned.
In a meticulous replica of a supermarket aisle, with shelves and cameras, a performer moves in a pig mask and Snow White dress: predatory and guileless at the same time. Visitors watch from the outside, like guards in a panopticon.
With dark humor, the supermarket becomes an allegory of a disillusioned society: why be virtuous if the world is going to hell?
