Het Oud Vliegveld - A dummy airfield or not?

Sun, 13 Sept 2026 · 10:00
Oud Vliegveld, Waasmunster
Free
What led the Belgian military authorities to construct an auxiliary airfield on the border between the municipalities of Waasmunster and Belsele in October 1939? Did this airfield play a role during the Achttiendaagse Veldtocht in May 1940? Who fired the first shot? How is the Drawing Academy linked to the Oud Vliegveld? What happened to the airfield after the liberation in September 1944? After reading these questions, has your interest been piqued in the Oud Vliegveld and its story during the interwar period and the Tweede Wereldoorlog? Good news! On September 13, 2026, the Working Group ’t Oud Vliegveld is organizing three guided walks at the Oud Vliegveld in Waasmunster as part of Open Monumentendag 2026. Not in the mood for a walking tour? No panic! Our heritage café with an adjoining pop-up exhibition is there for those who like to take it a bit easier or want to enjoy the beautiful nature in and around the Oud Vliegveld with a snack and a drink. Practical info: Participating in one of these three walking tours at 10:00, 13:00, or 16:00? Then be sure to register via the following email address: info.oudvliegveld@gmail.com. The asking price is 5 euros per person. This includes a drink of your choice after the walk. You can find the heritage café and pop-up exhibition at the following location: Oud Vliegveld 20, 9250 Waasmunster. This also serves as the starting point for all walks. For the walking tour of about 4.5 km, don't forget your walking shoes, as we will be climbing the ridge of the Wase Cuesta. A raincoat or umbrella might also be useful; unfortunately, we cannot predict the weather that day.
