One Day in Shanghai

What sort of city is Shanghai? Viewed from afar, it presents the image of a modern metropolis with dazzling lights and towering skyscrapers; yet upon closer inspection; one can truly appreciate the warmth and ease that permeate everyday life. People come and go at the stations, dappled light filters through the windows of old townhouses, the aroma of cooking wafts through the alleyways, and the local dialect is soft and melodious... For a century, Shanghai has consistently maintianed its character of blending Eastern and Western cultures, remaining open and inclusive, welcoming every encounter with visitors from all corners of the globe with an air of elegance and composure. Taking 'A Day's Stroll' as its thematic thread, this exhibition brings together a century of photographs from the Shanghai History Museum's collection with contemporary scenes of everyday urban life in Shanghai by the internationally renowned documentary photographer Michael Freeman. A graduate of Oxford University in geography, Freeman has forged a forty-year visual bond with China since his first visit in 1985, merging a geographer's broad vision with an anthropologist's attentive gaze upon the every day. With over 160 photography books to his name, his lens does not pursue grand narratives, but rather the warmth and humanity found in ordinary streets and alleyways. The moments captured in historical images and the photographer's keen artistic intuition intertwine through the lens to create a visual dialogue that transcends time and space. By juxtaposing images from the past and present, each photograph serves as a small gateway into Shanghai's daily life, revealing the city's unique character.
