Dorothy Gale, a shy kindergarten teacher, is swept away to the magical land of Oz, where she searches for a way to get back home. Sidney Lumet made a crazy film adaptation of the Broadway musical with The Wiz, featuring an entirely African-American cast. The result is visually masterful and wildly swinging. Met Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, and Lena Horne. Upon its release, the film was received with little enthusiasm and flopped at the box office. But time heals all wounds: slowly, The Wiz grew into a well-deserved classic. More magical than the original!
