Fred Wesley Generations

On November 16, de Singer welcomes the legendary trombonist Fred Wesley with his project Generations. As musical director of James Browns renowned band the JB’s, trombonist Fred Wesley was the most famous ‘sideman’ in the world in the sixties and seventies. He arranged all famous James Brown songs and wrote songs together with Brown like Hot Pants and Doing it to Death (We’re Gonna Have A Funky Good Time). He is therefore seen as one of the architects of funk music. After his departure from James Brown, Wesley played with The Count Basie Orchestra and with George Clintons Pariament-Funkadelic. He also worked with artists like Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton, Lenny Kravitz, Van Morrison, D'Angelo, and De La Soul. His influence reaches into hip-hop and modern music, where his work is often sampled. Met Generations Wesley builds a bridge between his rich funk past and his jazz roots. The trio consists, besides him, of the young organist Leonardo Corradi and the French drummer Tony Match. Together they bring an energetic mix of soul jazz and funk, with a tribute to the legendary Hammond organist Jimmy Smith, but the big funk hits of James Brown are certainly also covered.
