Het Gents Madrigaalkoor led by Johan Duijck brings an atmospheric and moody Christmas concert. Amidst winter silence, a musical story of wonder, expectation and celebration unfolds. Old and new sounds – from the fragile serenity of “In the bleak midwinter” and Lauridsen’s mystical “O magnum mysterium”, to the rhythmic play of “Tomorrow shall be my dancing day” and the radiant “Magnificat” – give voice to the birth of light in the darkest time of the year.
This program envelops the listener with warmth, mystery and a glimpse of the otherworldly. The choir is accompanied by and alternated with the organ, masterfully played by Peter Thomas.
For those who like it, the program is a substantive retelling of the Christmas story. For those who are not religious, the program offers above all timeless beauty and warmth in a dark time of the year.
