Witnesses talk about the Tweede Wereldoorlog
Op On Friday, November 6 at 7 PM, you can attend a free film screening at the HEY Museum about World War II and its impact on the residents of Knokke and Heist. 33 witnesses were interviewed and talk about their experiences 75 years ago. Not only the occupation is discussed, but also the flight, love and betrayal, and of course the long-awaited liberation.
De Tweede Wereldoorlog reached our seaside resort in May 1940 with German bombardments on the airfield of Het Zoute, after which the region remained occupied for more than four years. From 1941, bunkers were built along the coast as part of the Atlantic Wall to stop an Allied invasion. In the autumn of 1944, the Canadezen Operatie Switchback carried out to conquer the Scheldt estuary and make the port of Antwerp accessible. The fighting caused heavy shelling, floods, evacuations, and much suffering for the civilian population in the region. From November 1 to 3, 1944, Knokke, Duinbergen, Heist, and Zeebrugge were liberated in succession, bringing an end to the German occupation.
