Izabela Chamczyk 'The Skin'

Thu, 5 Nov 2026
Art Base, Brussels
A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts de Wrocarts, Polish artist Izabela Chamczyk radically redefines the boundaries of contemporary art through her innovative concept of performative painting. Rightly described as a "rebel artist," she rejects the passivity of traditional abstraction, adopting total engagement, confrontation, and proposing raw, uncompromising dialogue. Her canvases often resemble sculptural, textured, and shifting objects that activate not only the viewer's eye, but above all their sense of touch, balance, and sensory reactions to constantly mutating pictorial matter. Through her live performances exploring physicality, the desire for transgression, and pain, Izabela Chamczyk challenges conventions and short-circuits the codes of the art market. Her shows question, provoke, and sometimes disturb, demanding considerable emotional involvement from the visitor. By entering her universe — pictorial or performative — you are no longer simple observers: you become the witnesses and accomplices of a visceral and deeply personal art. The exhibition "the Skin" highlights the fact that painting is not an inert surface: it is like skin. The artist breaks the traditional concept of the window-painting to turn the pictorial matter into a living and sensitive organism. In this way, the canvas transforms into a reactive epidermis that breathes, suffers, stretches, and metamorphoses under the impulse of the creative gesture. The painting can also become the receptacle of trauma or resilience to make the marks of time and emotion visible, much like wrinkles and scars on a human body. Skin is naturally the interface between the intimate and the outside world. Our artist's painting acts in the same way: it externalizes deep psychic states while absorbing the energy of the surrounding space. It is an emotional membrane where the inside and the outside merge.
