Open-air cinema. Only indoors in case of bad weather. In Parijs in 1959, Jean-Luc Godard shoots his debut film À Bout de Souffle in 20 days, which later grows into a legendary classic. The film is the starting point of Nouvelle Vague, a new movement within French cinema. Godard, who until then is a film critic and writes for the renowned Cahiers du Cinéma, decides that making films himself is the best criticism. He receives funding for a low-budget film and adapts the screenplay by François Truffaut, about a gangster couple, to his own liking. Despite doubts from cast and crew about Godard’s peculiar working method, his debut proves to be a bullseye; with over 2.5 million visitors in France, awards for Godard, and a BAFTA nomination for lead actress Jean Seberg. Nouvelle Vague by the acclaimed director Richard Linklater (Boyhood) is a stylish and comedic tribute to the creation of À Bout de Souffle van Jean-Luc Godard, in the spirit of the French movement. In characteristic black-and-white and with a wink, the film reconstructs the making-of process of the famous classic and celebrates the art of filmmaking, the Franse Nouvelle Vague, and its legendary figures. Director: Richard Linklater | Duration: 105′ | Country: France | Year: 2025 | Language: English and French | Subtitles: Dutch | Genre: Comedy
