The former tuberculosis sanatorium in Sijsele is one of the hidden gems in West Flanders. Few know this fascinating history. Discover it now on Open Monumentendag De roots of Sanapolis lie in 1921. More than 100 years ago, this domain was founded by the Monthaye family who lost their son Louis to tuberculosis. Thanks to a crowdfunding campaign avant la lettre, they managed to raise enough money to purchase a site of 33 hectares. That capital round could also count on the support of the then Koningin Elisabeth and in 1928 the inauguration of the Sanatorium Elisabeth followed. Practical info: Our guides will take you on a fascinating journey of discovery on the domain and through our building. Afterwards, you will also get a virtual tour based on drone footage. Accessibility: The site is 100% accessible
