New Wave Night: The Breath of Life, CryptoChroma, The Garden of the Lost

In 2012, friends with a passion for 80s-90s wave music founded the band during a jam session in a living room. Friends who couldn't get enough of bands like IKON, The Mission, The Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Depeche Mode, and other great 80s and wave bands. They debuted with many covers of these bands and others in the genre. A few years ago, they started writing their own songs, with lyrics about "bittersweet emotions, love, happiness, sadness, or everyday worries". So they now present a diverse set in which their own songs predominate. With their own style, they combine dark, raw melodic chorus bass lines with a melodic or distorted guitar – accompanied by drums and synths on backing track. The vocals are a mix of melody, melancholy, emotional vulnerability, atmosphere, and intimacy. Now it is whispered: Time to step out of the shadows! CryptoChroma : the current solo electronic music project of Jan Vinoelst - guarantees cold, analog soundscapes, built from synthesizers, vintage equipment, and atmospheric textures. His musical journey, once founded in the mid-80s, has remained active in various musical collaborations and has gradually developed a style that emphasizes mood, introspection, and the darker sides of electronic music. CryptoChroma’s debut album NUMB (2020) explores themes such as anxiety, post-apocalypse, alienation, and greed, all wrapped in an 80s-like sonic aesthetic. This line was continued in the most recent album OMINOUS CLOUDS (2023) which was released only on vinyl by Red Maze Records / Strange Arts. THE BREATH OF LIFE : About our top act for this evening, you can safely speak of an institution. They have been active for more than 40 years and have always occupied a prominent place in the Belgische New Wave scene. We are therefore very honored that they are on our stage this year. The Breath of Life originated in the eighties when a trio of musicians was supplemented with a young singer. With the release of their second studio album "Taste of Sorrow" in 1994, they developed a unique sound, complemented by what the press described as the 'magical voice' of Isabelle Dekeyser. "The songs are engaging and energetic, with a prominent bass, nervous guitar parts, original use of the violin, stormy electronic atmospheres, and sometimes lyrical, sometimes angry vocals" (Carnets Noirs - International Scene). Their classic club hits "Nasty Cloud" and "Shining" will surely be familiar to you. After having given regional performances, they soon played all over Europe, including at major events such as Zillo Festival, M’era luna, Castle Party, Whitby Festival, Gothic Autumn Night, Eurorock, Dour Festival, Wave Gotik Treffen, etc. In 2020, The Breath of Life is back and proudly releases a new album, "SPARKS AROUND US" (produced by Gilles Martin). With this tenth release, the band once again takes the listener into their own, unique emotional world. New Wave Afterparty with DJ Lefty : Wie New Wave party at 't Perron automatically means DJ Lefty. Our very own resident DJ is at home in all markets but has a warm heart for the new wave scene and is one of the few DJs who stubbornly continues to play with vinyl.
