Vondel's angels - Het Zuidelijk Toneel

Het Zuidelijk Toneel, gradually a fixture in our program, accompanies us after Crashtest Ibsen (2023), Reigen re-erected (2025), and Not Quichot (2025) to the slipperiest depths of hell. Inspired by the famous play Lucifer by the Amsterdam poet Joost van den Vondel, the company makes these Vondel's angels. Iconic duo Sarah Moeremans (director) and Joachim Robbrecht (writer) fish the rebelling angels out of Vondel's play from the hottest lava lakes. How did they end up there? They rebelled against God's insane decision to elevate imperfect humans above them. And look now! 400 years after Vondel, it looks like humanity is completely neglecting its duty of care for the world and its fellow human beings. With flaming words, new fire, and ruthless questions, the angels (a.k.a. the permanent HZT ensemble) take on God, morality, and human failure again. And you? You travel along towards the pearly gates as a reservist in the comeback tour of the fallen angels.
