Tchaikovsky & Shostakovich

With its rich tradition, the Koninklijk Filharmonische Orkest van Luik is a player at an international level. Last season they turned heads from Amsterdam to Aix-en-Provence. And now in Ghent! In this program, the orchestra brings two Russian giants together, but a greater contrast between the romantic pathos of Tchaikovsky and the Soviet irony of Shostakovich is hardly imaginable. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is the romantic piano concerto par excellence . De Oezbeekse virtuoso Behzod Abudraimov will undoubtedly cater to Tchaikovsky (and the audience!) perfectly. Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony is an outlier between the epic Fifth and Seventh . The composer turns the classical form of the symphony upside down and creates a very personal and unique work. Chief conductor Lionel Bringuier breaks a lance with conviction for this rarely heard, atypically cut diamond.
