Excursion: in search of the beaver

Fri, 25 Sept 2026 · 18:30
De Maten, instapplaats Diepenbekerbos, Diepenbeek
Free
Where a beaver (family) is active, it leaves clear traces in the landscape. With their strong teeth, these large rodents can fell sturdy trees. Near the water, a beaver family builds a lodge with tree trunks, branches, and mud. They use gnawed trunks to build dams, which can sometimes cause the surrounding area to flood. That makes living with beavers a fascinating challenge. At In De Maten you can see, as is now the case in many places in Limburg, the traces of the beaver. There, too, they have an influence on the water level, and nature managers are working on better biodiversity with the help of the beaver population. During this walk, you will go in search of beaver traces, and who knows, we might even see a beaver emerge at twilight! Target audience: adults, families Guidance: Jos Ramaekers, LIKONA Mammal Working Group and Natuurpunt Diepenbeek Plaats Meeting point: De Maten, instapplaats Diepenbekerbos, Havenlaan 112, Diepenbeek
