In A Wave, choreographer Zoë Demoustier tackles iconic scenes from the 80s and 90s. She and her cast, each from different generations, (re)claim the dance heritage of the ‘Vlaamse Golf’ and go their own way with it. That ‘Vlaamse Golf’, characterized by their unconventional performances, has profoundly influenced our way of watching and dancing, it turns out, some 40 years later. In A Wave, choreographer Zoë Demoustier takes stock. With about fifteen dancers – from Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, supplemented by young people, a dancer from Platform K, and performers who created the pieces of yesteryear – she deconstructs monumental scenes from the 80s and 90s with an eye to the future. Together they figure out what should be passed on and what could use an update. But above all: how references are not a straitjacket, but a source for dance pleasure and – who knows – a new wave.
