24 Preludes and fugues at sunrise

Sun, 27 Sept 2026 · 07:00
Palmarium UGent, Ghent
€30
In this festival edition, music and the era are constantly in conversation with each other. We conclude, at the break of the last festival day, while the rest of the city is still sleeping, with one of the most timeless works of Dimitri Sjostakovitsj. Here, no epic kneeling for the Soviet regime, but music that is about music. About craft, and about the unlikely things that music is capable of on its own strength. The pianist Alexander Melnikov plays the complete collection of 24 Preludes and Fugues that Shostakovich wrote following the example of Johann Sebastian Bachs Wohltemperierte Klavier . We begin this miraculous journey through all 24 keys just before sunrise, and let the irresistible music of Shostakovich pave a way to the light. Melnikov made an impressive and leading recording of this work in 2010, and his sporadic complete live performances are a unique and unforgettable experience. Music on an empty stomach? Don't worry, a coffee and croissant are included in your concert ticket.
