\"The first psychedelic symphony in history”, that is how Leonard Bernstein Berlioz described Symphonie fantastique. In five movements, Berlioz tells the story of a young artist who, tormented by a hopeless love, takes opium. The effect: a hallucinatory trip full of visions, madness, and despair. To give shape to those inner turbulences, Berlioz takes untrodden paths. He plays with conventions only to arrive at a revolutionary piece of music. That same spirit of renewal sounds in Chairman Dances van John Adams and Belgian composer Wim Henderickx. Is this classical? Is it dance music? It is both! Henderickx’ work is simultaneously an ode to, and renewal of, classical music. Just like with Berlioz, percussion and brass instruments also provide a new and idiosyncratic orchestral color with Hendrickx. Programma Dirigent: Martijn Dendievel Solisten: Duo ART’uur John Adams (°1947) / The Chairman Dances, foxtrot for orchestra Wim Henderickx (1962 - 2022) / Duo concerto for trumpet, percussion, and orchestra Hector Berlioz (1803 - 1869) / Symphonie Fantastique (side-by-side with SOV Young)
