The singer Tutu Puoane and the pianist Ewout Pierreux met during a rehearsal in Belgium in 2003 and have since become inseparable.
The meeting between Tutu Puoane's South African roots and Ewout Pierreux's piano playing, nourished by classical music and jazz, has given birth to a unique blend of African, European, and American musical traditions, imbued with soul and jazz, their two great common passions.
For over twenty years, they have collaborated on numerous projects and have released several albums together in varied formations. For Tutu's recent recording project, Wrapped In Rhythm, a double album, they co-wrote numerous compositions inspired by the poems of the South African writer, actress, and activist Lebo Mashile. The latter's poetry offers a look that is both intimate and singular at the reality and emotional universe of a young black South African woman belonging to the first post-apartheid generation.
The first volume of the project, produced by Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Thomas Dybdahl, Herbie Hancock, Tracy Chapman, among others), was released in March 2024. The second volume, produced in collaboration with the famous Metropole Orkest from the Netherlands and enriched with arrangements by Bert Joris, was released in September 2025.
As a duo, Tutu Puoane and Ewout Pierreux draw from their vast repertoire of standards, covers, and original compositions, taking full advantage of the freedom and proximity that this intimate formula offers. A different musical journey at each concert, but always carried by that touch of magic that makes each of their performances a unique experience.
