In zij en hij (she and he) we meet a couple who returns home late at night after a film premiere. Not just any film premiere, but that of the film in which the female character herself shines. The couple has presented the perfect picture to the audience all evening. But from the moment they find themselves between their own walls, a nocturnal confrontation arises in which he reveals his deep-rooted need for recognition, and she desperately tries to distance herself from it.
The characters partly carry a background with them that places them outside the Western, white norm. Their struggle is not only about personal frustrations that they compare with each other, but also about the pressure to want to break through prejudices and expectations of the outside world.
Noa Tambwe Kabati and Ibtissam Boulbahaiem are inspired for zij en hij by the film Malcolm & Marie van Sam Levinson. This inspiration creates the space for them to dive into the living world of a couple that finds itself semi-parallel to their personal living world in the art world and wants to give their partly Congolese and Moroccan roots a place in it.
Young makers to discover, then! Ibtissam Boulbahaiem graduated from LUCA Drama in 2022. Noa Tambwe Kabati played the lead role in the Streamz series Kameleon and was also seen in the film Nowhere by director Peter Monsaert.
