Auteur Stijn Streuvels adorned the shortlist of the Nobelprijs Literatuur no fewer than 15 times during his life and well-being, received the five-yearly Staatsprijs Letterkunde three times, and received the Nederlandse Letterenprijs for his entire oeuvre. His novels ‘De Vlasschaard’ and ‘De teloorgang van de waterhoek’ were filmed. Exactly 100 years after the first publication, Kurt Defrancq is now bringing Streuvels’ third masterpiece – the novella ‘Leven en dood in den Ast’ – to the stage, with live music by Innerwoud. Both players and the audience are literally ‘in den Ast’ (a black box instead of classic hall chairs). Surrounded by animated images from the brand-new Graphic Novel based on the original book, spectators are thus immersed in a magical universe.
