Treasures from the city archive, among others Charter van Kortenberg - Henry Van de Velde - Strolling through the Dorpstraat Op December 2, 1935, Henry Van de Velde signs the contract for the construction of a new, urban vocational school. He is rooted in the arts and crafts. The painter-designer ultimately chooses an architectural career. His mark on art nouveau in Belgium and Bauhaus, with Weimar as its center, is great. The new vocational school is a visionary, modernist building. Today it houses the library and the city archive. And a bit hidden, a monumental Rinus Van de Velde. De Leuvenaar pays tribute to Vandevelde in his typical way. Het Smoldersplein is then reconstruction after the Eerste Wereldoorlog in art deco. We also walk into the courthouse for a moment. Without the slightest doubt, the Diestsestraat is one of the oldest shopping streets in Leuven. The first name Dorpstraat refers to the village of Oppendorp, located outside the first ring wall. Once, this street had the most cafes and breweries in Leuven. Breweries in the Diestsestraat? Few streets in Leuven are so marked by the First and Tweede Wereldoorlog. Several new building lines have not erased the historical character. And yet the street still has beautiful historical buildings.
