Donnie Darko, the dark sci-fi gem from 2001, grew almost entirely through word-of-mouth into one of the cult films of the early 2000s. Regisseur Richard Kelly’s debut had a little-remembered run in theaters. Released barely two months after 9/11, the film seemed doomed to fail from the start. Despite this difficult beginning, Donnie Darko became a true underground hit and grew into a must-see for every film lover with a nose for eccentric cinema. “The brooding saxophones added an extra nerve-wracking layer to the story, and the more Jake Gyllenhaal mentally deteriorated, the more that overstimulation made sense within the context of the film.
