Gripping music theater about liberation
Seven performers bring the fascinating story of Simurgh, the Persian phoenix. Interwoven with this myth are texts by Narges Mohammadi, the political activist and Nobel Prize winner who spent many years in an Iranian cell because of her criticism of the regime. What appears as history is the reality of today, and what is real seems as if it were dreamed. ZAN unfolds in a landscape of voices, synthesizers, sitar, and electronics, and draws from spiritual traditions, mourning, trance, anger, and tenderness.
