Film Club 62: The Maiden's Island

In the year 1542, an expedition to the Nieuwe Wereld takes place. 17-year-old Marguerite de la Rocque is there, because she is soon to marry the commander – who is also her uncle. Everything changes when she meets crew member Thomas. He takes advantage of the situation and leaves her pregnant. As punishment, Marguerite, along with Thomas and a maid, is left behind on an uninhabited island off the coast of Newfoundland. For two years they must struggle to survive there, despite persistent hunger, biting cold, and all-encompassing despair.
