The Handover

De Centrale, Ghent
€5–11
The Handover is an acclaimed trio with roots in Egypt, Norway, and Belgium. Their music blends rhythmic traditions from Egypt with psychedelic improvisations, driving riffs, and an experimental sound. Their self-titled debut album, released on the American cult label Sublime Frequencies, received much praise and is considered one of the label's most notable releases. Their second album, New Old Medicine, was released in June 2026. The Handover possesses an almost telepathic musical tuning, making every performance a unique and subtle experience. Even without percussion, their music is full of groove and feels organic and supported. Inspired by the hypnotic, trance-inducing music traditions from the Nile Delta, they combine repetitive patterns reminiscent of krautrock with the intensity of avant-garde jazz from the sixties. Through raw, playful improvisation, they create a form of pure psychedelia, futuristic and ancient at the same time. The trio built a strong live reputation. Highlights included performances at Berlin Jazzfest, WOMEX, Oslo World, Summer Bummer Festival, BRDCST Festival, Baignade Sauvage, Rewire, and Counterflows. Aly Eissa – oud; Egypte Ayman Asfour – violin; Egypte Jonas Cambien (BE/NO) – keys; Belgium/Norway
