Anton Webern (1883-1945)Langsamer Satz Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953)String Quartet No. 2, op. 92 Moving between post-Romantic warmth and the modernity of the 20th century, this programme presents two contrasting aspects of the string quartet. Anton Webern’s Langsamer Satz (1905) remains deeply rooted in the Romantic tradition. A very different voice emerges in Sergei Prokofiev’s String Quartet No. 2 from 1941. Drawing on folk melodies from the Caucasus, he transforms this material into music with a sharply defined rhythmic profile, especially in the final movement, where the strings at times sound almost percussive.
