Midsommar

Sun, 21 Jun 2026 · 19:30
Cinema ZED - Vesalius, Leuven
€10–12
When Wanneer Christian and his friends travel to distant Sweden for a unique midsummer festival in a remote village, his girlfriend Dani invites herself along. Their relationship was on the verge of breaking up, but after a terrible family tragedy, Dani was so lost that Christian couldn't leave her behind. The idyllic village seems like the perfect place for a carefree summer adventure and a unique opportunity to experience a folkloric celebration around midsummer night. The villagers invite them to participate, but the rituals and customs turn out to be much darker than expected, and the adventure takes a sinister turn. Specifically for Cinema ZED Leuven Van June 19 to 21, as a Cineviller you can bring a +1 for free to all our screenings. We conclude with Midsommar on Sunday, June 21 - folk horror, flower crowns, and existential dread: all under a shining sun. Because what other film would you watch on the longest day of the year? Commentaar Vorig year ago, Ari Asters's debut film Hereditary was - quite rightly - praised to the skies as an intelligent horror film. Its successor Midsommar also combines clever scares with underlying themes like grief and mourning, but chooses a resolutely different aesthetic. And it is very bold: Aster steps completely out of the dark world of shadows where horror films usually take place into a world where it never gets dark: a dreamy setting bathed in white sunlight. This makes the film perhaps a little less 'scary' but all the more alienating, disturbing, and at times shocking.
