When reed cutter Johan finds the lifeless body of a young girl on his land, he is struck by an inexplicable feeling of guilt. While he takes on the care of his granddaughter, he goes in search of answers and tries to track down the evil in the vast reed fields. Met Rietland director Sven Bresser combines poetic images with a vague, eerie feeling, without ever making that dark undertone very explicit. In terms of tone, Bresser successfully takes inspiration from films like Memories of Murder of Spoorloos, yet with a completely Dutch individuality. This is mainly expressed in the stubborn, taciturn protagonist Johan, authentically portrayed by Gerrit Knobe. The film premiered last year in the Semaine de la Critique section of the Cannes film festival - something that had not happened for a Dutch feature film since De Poolse bruid in 1998 - and was also the Dutch entry for the Oscars.
