De San Franciscaanse band Swell was founded in the nineties by David Freel and Sean Kirkpatrick in the Tenderloin district, not exactly the glamorous side of the city, and from there built a catalog of cinematic songs that balanced somewhere between dreamy and raw. Freel, who passed away last year, was not called the "godfather of lo-fi" for nothing.
For this European tour, a new lineup was put together: original member Sean Kirkpatrick on drums, John Dettman on vocals and guitar, Tim Adams on bass, and Philippe Gunst (from the Belgian post-punk band Fragment) on guitar and keys. Not a nostalgia project, but a band that re-experiences the Swell repertoire with a fresh perspective, without losing the original soul of the songs.
