Art Deco in Anderlecht

Sat, 5 Sept 2026 · 10:00
In the centre of the Meir square, Brussels
€10–15
The Meir district in Anderlecht is the largest urban planning operation that Anderlecht has known since the creation of the Cureghem district at the end of the 19th century. Decided shortly before the First World War, the development of this new residential district will take place essentially in the interwar period. Imagined around a large roundabout and a park, the Astrid Park, and intended for the middle class, it forms an extremely coherent and well-preserved architectural ensemble where the Art Déco style predominates. The individual house is found there in all its forms and the apartment building punctuates the streets of this green and airy district. The facades with ornate decorations offer a beautiful panorama of the different trends of Art Déco architecture. This visit is the opportunity to discover the unsuspected riches of a little-known district which nevertheless hosts works by architects such as Antoine Courtens, Fernand Brunfaut or even Léon Sneyers.
