Self-chosen or forced by circumstances: an exile marks a new beginning in any case. Componist Erich Korngold moved from Austria to California in search of fame, and he acquired it with his film music. Yet he also left behind one symphony – perhaps his most personal work, marked by his artistic and personal tensions. Ook de Nederlands- Kurdish composer Hawar Tawfiq knows what it is to leave your country and start over. rIJks describes his first walk from the IJ to the Rijksmuseum in the world city of Amsterdam. It became a musical journey of discovery full of wonder. Dmitri Sjostakovitsj, finally, did not seek a new country, but a way to survive in the Soviet Unie van Stalin. Between folds and resistance: his difficult relationship with the politics of his time speaks from his entire oeuvre. He wrote his Het Eerste cello concerto in calmer waters, after the death of Stalin. Although his struggle between creativity and the Soviet authorities was not over, it did not prevent him from making a masterpiece. In the hands of top cellist Daniël Müller-Schott, this is a work that gets under the skin.
