While the inhabitants of Iraq in the 90s are trying to survive amidst war and food shortages, Saddam Hoessein demands that every school in the country bake a cake to celebrate his birthday. It is 9-year-old Lamia who, after a draw, has to get the job done by the president's birthday party. Together with her pet rooster Hindi and classmate Saeed, she determinedly begins a journey from the countryside to the city, diligently searching for the necessary, yet expensive, ingredients. Commentary As befits a true crowd-pleaser , this coming-of-age fable leaves no one uncharmed - and the acting performance of the mischievous Baneen, who plays Lamia, certainly has something to do with that! The film was the first Iraqi film ever to compete at the Filmfestival van Cannes and immediately won the Caméra d'Or for best debut film and the Audience Award there. Moving, bittersweet, warm, and with the necessary dose of humor, in short: with all the necessary ingredients for a film you really want to have seen.
