The term ‘legendary’ is often used. But if it applies to one band, it is Teenage Fanclub. Since their breakthrough album Bandwagonesque from 1991, the band from Glasgow has not only been riding a flawless course, they have also inspired countless pop and rock artists. Or to put it in the words of Dave Grohl: “All I wanted to do was write a song as good as Teenage Fanclub.” With their combination of pop melodies borrowed from The Byrds, The Beach Boys, and The Beatles, and their love for distortion and noise, Teenage Fanclub mixed the power pop of Big Star and The Raspberries with the alt-rock of their time and thus pushed the genre into the nineties. Their twelve studio albums and a career of nearly forty years also make Teenage Fanclub a rare example of a band that remains consistent without giving in to nostalgia. Bandwagonesque (1991), Grand Prix (1995), and Songs from Northern Britain (1997) are the undisputed classics, but later albums such as Howdy! (2000) and the softer Nothing Lasts Forever (2023) also still stand firm. Not coincidentally, The Guardian Teenage Fanclub calls them “Scotland’s most reliable ray of sunshine”. Live, too, the gentlemen play the roof off everywhere. This autumn the band is touring Europe again and they are also stopping in Bruges. Do not miss these legends!
