‘Seaven Tears. Dowland Retold’ is a living palimpsest. A performance in which different time dimensions exist side by side and unfold. Layers of sound, memory, and meaning constantly emerge and disappear again. The work reflects on the fragile process of remembering – how we remember, retell, forget, and invent things – and how these changeable memories shape the realities in which we live. Starting from John Dowlands ‘Lachrimae’ (1604), a suite of seven melancholic pavanes originally written for lute and violin consort, ‘Seaven Tear s. Dowland retold’ reinterprets this intimate ensemble for the time in which we live now: lute, viola, accordion, and early analog electronics. Each instrument takes its own temporal and interpretive layer – some remain close to the original material, others fragment or filter it through improvisation and electronic processing. ‘Seaven Tear s. Dowland retold’ is located in the tension between memory and fiction, presence and absence. It is not only a meditation on loss or decay of memory, but also a celebration of the creative potential of memory. By retelling, we not only remember, but we also reimagine.
