Night of the Bat at Lieteberg

Do you get cold chills at the word \"bat\"? That is actually not necessary at all, because they do not fly into your hair, are not aggressive, and they certainly do not turn into a vampire. Come and discover everything about these nocturnal animals at Lieteberg on Friday, August 28. Although there are more than 1400 species of bats worldwide, only about twenty species occur in Flanders, most of which are endangered. In winter, bats hibernate. In summer, they are active, looking for their favorite snack: mosquitoes, moths, and spiders. So, the perfect moment to be able to spot them. That is why our nature guide Gilbert Bastiaens, on Friday, August 28, at sunset, would like to go looking for these flying nocturnal animals with you on the Lieteberg domain. Armed with a bat detector, we will discover together which bats are active. After all, to fly in the dark, bats emit ultrasonic sounds and ‘listen’ to the echoes that bounce back from their environment. The bat detector converts these ultrasonic sounds of bats into sounds audible to us. Program Friday 28/08: Reception from 6:45 PM at Belevingscentrum Biodiversiteit Lieteberg. 7 PM: start of presentation. Get to know the bats in Flanders. And discover which stories and legends about these animals are true and which are not. At sunset, around 7:30 PM, we head outside with the bat detector in search of bats. End scheduled for 8:30 PM.
