Discover the hidden past of Hasselt during an exclusive walk past three historical icons: the Refugiehuis van Herkenrode, the Oude Gevangenis, and the atmospheric Begijnhof (Beguinage). Step through the gates of the Refugiehuis van Herkenrode, the oldest civic building in the city. Admire the beautiful architecture that has graced the streetscape for centuries and reflects the power of the abbey. Here, the choir nuns of the Herkenrode Abbey used to seek safety in turbulent times. After a beautiful restoration, it now houses the rectorate and a number of UHasselt services. Next, we visit the Oude Gevangenis, where the walls whisper stories of justice and injustice. Experience how this impressive monument has been transformed into a modern campus of the Universiteit Hasselt, without losing its raw history. We wander through the imposing corridors and get a unique glimpse into the former prison life. We visit this site on a Friday so that we can get to know a faculty in full operation. Our journey ends in the serene peace of the Begijnhof van Hasselt, an oasis of silence in the middle of the bustling center. Walk past the picturesque houses and learn all about the strong women who lived here through the centuries. Let yourself be enchanted by the atmosphere of the historical courtyard garden, where time seems to stand still for a moment. Last year, the Faculty of Architecture and Arts found a new home in the Beguinage houses. The site also became an open green space in the city for rest and meeting. Don't miss this chance to look behind the scenes at these three Hasselt gems. -------------------------------------------- Organization : Hasseltse Toeristische Gidsen vzw (HTG) Guide : Willy Orlandini Info and reservation : willy.orlandini@gmail.com
