Hidden vault paintings of Sint-Gummarus

Under centuries-old layers of lime in the Sint-Gummaruskerk, exceptional 16th-century vault paintings appear to have been preserved. On the central vault, among other things, the year 1548, the coat of arms of the Saint Gummarus chapter, and richly elaborated decorative motifs were found. During this scaffolding visit, you will discover how restorers investigate which historical paintings have been preserved, how they document them, and which techniques they apply to safely preserve this fragile heritage. This is an exceptional opportunity to admire these paintings up close. As soon as the restoration works are continued, they will disappear again behind the protective finishing layer.
