Nature at the Schoonselhof

Het Schoonselhof is the iconic cemetery of Antwerp. Many famous Antwerp residents found their eternal rest here. Dog owners and joggers come to seek that peace here daily. For us, Natuurpunters, it is also an interesting place to explore. Only a fence separates this domain from fort 7. But where nature is allowed to go its own way at the fort, one tries to find a balance between ‘park’ and ‘wild nature’ at the cemetery. You will find, for example, special trees here but also various plant species. Black woodpecker and squirrel are familiar faces here. Herons breed in the trees. Sometimes you even find a herd of sheep here. Every season has its charm and we seek the charms of the Schoonselhof in the autumn: the time of mushrooms and multicolored tree leaves, the time that nature is generous with nuts, fruits, and seeds. Curious what the Schoonselhof has to offer us today! Appointment: corner Krijgsbaan (R11) and Sint Bernardsesteenweg (N148) Parking is possible in the doctor Robert Kochlaan, a parking zone between the R11 and the bike path, on the other side of the road. Bring: sturdy walking shoes (not all paths we use are paved!), clothing adapted to the weather conditions, possibly binoculars.
