The clothes slid off the angel and he became all light. No eye could see him anymore. The ceiling opened and wings appeared on the angel's back. Then he ascended. Lev Tolstoj John, John, John , is a visual and musical theater performance about the importance of rituals and community. Humanity finds itself in a world that threatens to lose its existing rituals. Many original and therefore recognizable rituals, such as oracles, incantations, campfire stories, sacrificial feasts, celebrating a god,... are experiences that are disappearing and there are (yet) no new, contemporary alternatives. The (divine) rituals seem to be making way for the idea of 'event'. The actors see 'an empty world' emerging around them, in which individual experience is central, in which the digital world seems more important than the physical world. Where the idea of community has disappeared and in which a form of apparent authenticity seems to drive people further apart than it brings them together.
