The flight to Waremme

Sat, 18 Jul 2026 · 20:45
Festival Bruxellons! Au Château du Karreveld, Brussels
It is June 21, 1791, Louis XVI, deprived of his powers by the constituent assembly, decides to flee Paris with his whole family. Pursued by the republican guards, he wants to reach the royalist bastion of Montmédy while Marie-Antoinette dreams of joining her brother's troops massed on the other side of the Belgian border. A royal dispute breaks out in the carriage and the coachman, feeling the wind turn, abandons them to their fate. Louis XVI, more gifted at repairing locks than at horse riding, is forced to drive the carriage himself. Cutting across fields and marshes, they try to reach Varennes and cross the Belgian border without realizing it, and it is finally in Waremme, near Liège, that the royal party, exhausted and hungry, comes to an end. It is there that they will be arrested in a small establishment, known even today by the name of "la Frite Royale". So why have we maintained this mystery and these lies until today? State secrets, superior interests... It is this historical truth that we have decided to re-establish today, for you, in "La fuite à Waremme".
