On Saturday, October 4, Natuurpunt Markvallei is organizing a fascinating afternoon walk through the Ekstergoor nature reserve. At 2:00 PM, we will gather at Klampovenstraat for a trip through an area that has undergone a remarkable transformation: from a non-conforming airfield to a full-fledged and living heathland. Thanks to targeted restoration works, Ekstergoor is step by step regaining its original character. Newly constructed pools offer amphibians like salamanders and frogs a suitable living environment again, and the results are already clearly visible. The most spectacular return is undoubtedly that of the great grey shrike, a characteristic bird of prey that considers the open heath as its natural hunting ground. Its return to Ekstergoor is striking proof that restoration pays off. During the walk, our guides will explain which works have been carried out, what the ecological impact is, and what the area will look like in the future. Be sure to bring sturdy walking shoes. And more good news: this walk counts for the Markathon, so seize your chance to collect points while enjoying nature in the Mark Valley.
