Common and Loweiden van Assebroek - the oldest commons in Flanders

Sat, 19 Sept 2026 · 15:30
Kasteel van Ryckevelde, Sijsele
€5–30
Common lands, wastelands, 'vroenten', commons, 'the community'... These are all descriptions of a form of grassroots democracy and sharing economy avant-la-lettre. This system had a huge influence on our landscape, and it is still visible today! De Gemene and Loweiden van Assebroek are a beautiful and unique piece of heritage in Flanders. Professor Tine De Moor (Rotterdam School of Management) and 'headman' Marc Vandepitte will take you through the area and show you how the landscape developed over time under the influence of humans and the principle of 'common lands'. Today, the common Gemene and Loweiden van Assebroek is still a vibrant citizens' collective. Welcome to this beautiful and fascinating walk with plenty of food for thought. We will conclude with a debriefing and a drink on the terrace of Kasteel Ryckevelde. In collaboration with Commons Lab vzw, De Gemene and Loweiden van Assebroek. Guides: Koen Wynants, Marc Vandepitte, Tine De Moor
