Conference by Didier Roth-Bettoni: Between underground and activism: a post-Stonewall queer cinema
Tue, 3 Nov 2026 · 19:30
LaVallée, Brussels
Political, sexual, and experimental, the cinema that is born in the wake of the Stonewall revolt reinvents, in the margins of the industry, the images of gays, lesbians, and trans people. It is a cinema of queer empowerment, of the taking control of their representations and their stories by all those whom mainstream cinema had until then so often reduced to stereotypes, not to say caricatures.…
Didier Roth-Bettoni is a writer and film historian. He has had multiple lives: festival manager, bookseller, journalist for several film and LGBTQI magazines, author of numerous books on queer cinema. Passionate about the work and the figure of the British filmmaker and artist Derek Jarman, he dedicated a work to him Sebastiane, ou saint Jarman, cinéaste queer et martyr (ErosOnyx,2014)
His great work remains L'homosexualité au cinéma published in 2007 by La Musardine. This book is being reissued these days in an expanded edition of 400 pages under the title: Queer Cinema 1895-2025, une histoire mondiale des représentations LGBTQI à l'écran.
