Meet the expert, Apolline Malevez

This guided tour sets out to discover the Maison des Arts through the history of the people who took care of it. The lifestyle in bourgeois houses at the beginning of the 20th century relies largely on the delegation of domestic work. Yet the people who perform it remain invisibilized, as is still often the case today. The tour asks the following questions: what was the path of the servants in the house? Who were they and what did their work consist of? What spaces were reserved for them? Apolline Malevez is an art historian and postdoctoral researcher at Université de Gand. Her research focuses on representations of domestic interiors in Belgium at the end of the 19th century as well as on the contribution of artists' surroundings to the making of art.
