Tehillim (1981), Steve Reich’s definitive masterpiece, forms the centrepiece of the evening. At the other end of the spectrum, Gavin Bryars’ The Sinking of the Titanic (1972) gives a different meaning to the word ‘minimalism’. This concert is conceived as a poetic and quasi-narrative experience. Carefully lit, amplified and mixed in quadraphonic sound. It begins with the ‘instrumental theatre’ of Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question (1908) and features, as an interlude, Steve Reich’s Proverb from 1995 — a gem of simplicity and unerring expression.
