In Martha, the madwoman becomes a noblewoman Martha van Vlierbeke wrongly accused of madness and removed from society. Emotion is mistaken for hysteria, the demand for self-determination is dismissed as insanity. The play takes place in an 18th-century Flemish castle. The child of noblewoman Martha is taken away, which leads to a shocking series of events. Money-hungry men try to restrict the reproduction and sexuality of the female characters. Opposite them are steadfast noblewomen, cunning nuns, and unreliable chambermaids who challenge what is socially acceptable. For this performance, actress and theater maker Lauranne Paulissen digs up the forgotten Antwerp playwright Anna Slimbroeck-de Peuter from the archive. The 19th-century de Peuter was one of the most performed Flemish playwrights at the time. Even up to 50 years after her death, her plays continued to dominate the Flemish stages. Nevertheless, she is no longer an established value today and her plays are almost impossible to find. Reason enough to bring the debut of this author 'Martha, de krankzinnige' back to the stage more than 100 years later! Lauranne Paulissen works together with Edith Cassiers, Katarina Antunovic, Sara Lâm, and Véronique Hendriks in an exclusively female cast and crew. Through grotesque gender-bending play, the theater makers enter into a dialogue with the provocative exaggeration and humor of melodrama, the juicy 'Flemish' language, and the themes of the play that are still pressing today. This performance is part of the JNG WRK bundle, where we offer you young makers or new faces. We offer this bundle at a super advantageous price. Discover it here.
