'Remember me...' November concert with vocal music by Henry Purcell
Met Remember me… we dive into the world of Henry Purcells tragic queens: female voices on the border of love, power, loss, and death. At the center is Purcell’s poignant Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary. Around this monument of mourning, we let echoes sound from Dido and Aeneas, The Fairy Queen, and The Indian Queen, supplemented by songs from Orpheus Britannicus. This creates a dramatic portrait in fragments: from Dido’s unforgettable complaint “Remember me” to the solemn silence around Queen Mary II. Purcell proves himself here as a master of English baroque: sober, direct, and heartbreakingly human.
Featuring: Ineke De Vylder - mezzo, Bruno De Canne - baritone, The CloseOpera Ensemble conducted by Ineke De Vylder, Sanderijn Demuynck - harpsichord and Gert-Jan Verbueken - cello and viola da gamba
