June 30th, 1703 is not immediately a date that rings a bell. For tens of thousands of soldiers and citizens in the region of Ekeren, Hoevenen, Stabroek, Kapellen, and the forgotten polder villages Oorderen and Wilmarsdonk, the tension was nevertheless palpable. On that day, cannons thundered over the polders. Thousands of soldiers from France and Spain faced those of the Verenigde Nederlandse Provinciën. The fateful encounter between the generals of Louis XIV and the British Marshal Marlborough remained undecided. There was neither a winner nor a loser. It was a battle full of courage and misunderstandings, struggle and strategy – with a major impact on the Antwerp polder villages and its inhabitants.
Ook Danny Snelders only discovered a few years ago that his beloved ‘Ekeren’ was the scene of a military battle more than three hundred years ago. He wanted to know everything about it. The result of his research is an engaging narrative, rich in images, facts, and surprising trivia. From military science to art heritage, from poems and songs to plays, from tactics to human stories.
He is happy to tell you all about it on Saturday, November 7th, from 11 AM to 12:30 PM.
