Art Nouveau and Art Deco in Schaerbeek

Sat, 14 Nov 2026 · 14:00
chaussée de Haecht, Brussels
€10–15
At the beginning of the 20th century, the village of Schaerbeek was transformed by the creation of the prestigious avenue Louis Bertrand. A new residential and tree-lined neighborhood attracted a wealthy population that called upon the best architects of the era. Victor Horta, Gustave Strauven, François Hemelsoet or else Henri Jacobs reinvented the single-family home, the apartment building or the school complex there. A few years later, a little further on, part of the railway line connecting the quartier Léopold station to the Gare du Nord was relocated. In its place, the very beautiful avenue Paul Deschanel was created, a true repertoire of interwar architecture, between Art Déco and Modernism, single-family homes and sometimes spectacular-looking apartment buildings.
