The film choice of Bendt Eyckermans: The Arrival of Joachim Stiller by Harry Kümel
Sun, 1 Nov 2026 · 20:00 · until Mon, 23 Nov
Cinema Sphinx, Ghent
€10–12
On the occasion of his solo exhibition The Passenger at S.M.A.K. from October 31, 2026, to February 21, 2027, Bendt Eyckermans is given carte blanche to curate a film program in Sphinx Cinema.
For his selection, Bendt was inspired by the work of Harry Kümel. He chose De komst van Joachim Stiller and Malpertuis, two films in which he sees common ground with his own paintings. Just as in Kümel's films, a mysterious, almost magical-realist atmosphere hangs in his work.
Everyday scenes from his studio or from the street are translated into compositions that leave room for suggestion and mystery. The locations also play a role in his choice: De komst van Joachim Stiller takes place in Antwerp, the city where Bendt lives, while Malpertuis takes place in Ghent, the city where he is exhibiting with The Passenger.
De komst van Joachim Stiller will be screened at Sphinx cinema on November 1, 2026.
Malpertuis will be screened on November 23, 2026.
